My name is Myles Noel and I’m from Norfolk, Virginia. Both of my parents are from the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, so being a first generation child really influenced the way I grew up. First, I was exposed a lot to their culture, whether it be the food or the music, and I hope to learn more about it during my time on campus. Most importantly, however, they taught me the importance of my education, which created my passion for learning.
I hope to major in Course 5, possibly a double major in Course 8, we’ll see. Other than chemistry, I’ve always been interested in history, specifically African American History.
I attended Norview High School, which had a program called the Leadership Center for Sciences and Engineering (LCSE). Being in LCSE, I developed a passion for STEM. During high school, I participated in multiple activities, such as playing the double bass in orchestra, Varsity Tennis, Model UN, Model Judiciary, National Honors Society, Scholastic Bowl, and African American History Bowl.
I’m not sure which future career I want, whether it be a research chemist at NASA or possibly a future professor, however, I hope to serve as an example to other people of color by becoming a leader in the field of STEM. Ultimately, I hope to carry on my parents' dreams, to make them proud and make the sacrifices they made coming to this country worthwhile.
